Moderate Sweep Calculator

Moderate sweep referring to the angle of sweepback (also known as sweep angle), is a design parameter in aircraft engineering that affects the wing’s geometry. Moderate sweep angles are typically between 20 to 40 degrees, where the wing’s leading edge is swept backward from the perpendicular to the aircraft’s longitudinal axis.

Formula: The formula for calculating the position of the quarter-chord point (a point along the wing’s mean aerodynamic chord) in relation to the root chord length (Cr) and the sweep angle (λ) is given by:

  • Yc is the distance from the aircraft centerline to the quarter-chord point (in meters or feet).
  • Cr is the root chord length (in meters or feet).
  • λ (lambda) is the sweep angle (in radians).
