Velocity of a Spark Ignition Piston Engine Calculator

The velocity of a spark ignition engine, particularly for the movement of the piston, is calculated based on the engine’s operating parameters. In the context of aircraft design, the piston speed (V) can be calculated using the following formula:

  • V = Displacement velocity of the engine (in cubic meters, m³)
  • ṁ = Mass Flow Rate (in kilograms per second, kg/s)
  •  ρ = Density of the air-fuel mixture (in kilograms per cubic meter, kg/m³)
  • A = Cross sectional area of Engine speed (in revolutions per minute, RPM, which may need to be converted to seconds)
